Canton Fall Classic 2007 |

The 2007 edition of the Canton Fall Classic featured many of the best features of previous races. As in many other years a dreary Saturday was followed by a beautiful Sunday race day. And as in previous years both the 5K and the 10K saw excellent competition between past winners along with some exciting newcomers. The 10k race was a rematch of previous winners Jason Cakouros and Larry Sayers. In 2004 it was Cakouros who first caught and then pulled away from Sayers at the
top of the hill in mile 5 enroute to his 3d straight victory. This year Sayers was the runner who managed to get a small gap at 5, holding it until the finish for his 3rd
straight win. Sayers' time of 33:15 (5:22 pace) at age 49 shows he will be one of the best seniors in New England when he turns 50. Cakouros crossed the line a scant 6 seconds later. Through the first 3 miles, passed in 15:43, Canton's own Deon Barrett was among the leaders. He dropped off the pace around the 4
th mile and had to settle for 3d with a respectable 33:47. Jessica Ackerman continued her dominance in local road races with a stellar effort. She was 8th
overall in 37:16, just over 6 min pace per mile and the 4th
best women's time on the course. She became Canton's first overall winner in the 10k since George Grant in the inaugural event (1989). While second place finisher Amanda Kourtz ran a very good time of 39:03 she was nearly 2 minutes behind. Ackerman is a graduate of Canton High where she was a swimmer and has been a top finisher in area triathlons this summer. She also placed second overall in the town's 4
th of July race. In the 5K Robert LaPlante joined the three time winner club with his fastest time yet (15:56). LaPlante becomes one of less than 10 runners to run under 16 minutes on the 5K course. His
nearest competitor was Mike Morris from So. Hadley at 16:12. The women's winner Laura Kennedy of Charlestown (18:35) outpacing Braintree High senior Erynn Sweeney at 20:27. Another noteworthy performance was turned in by 15 yr old
Christian Bates of canton who finished 5th in 18:18.
